SASSA R350 Grant: What Government Payroll Registered

SASSA R350 Grant: What Government Payroll Registered Means

Around 4 million Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications were rejected since the support mechanism was reintroduced in August 2021.

SRD grant applications can be rejected for a number of different reasons. One of the reasons provided by SASSA for rejecting R350 grants is government_payroll_registered.

People who are registered government employees are not eligible for the SRD R350 grant, which is what could bring about this response from SASSA. The SRD grant is meant to provide assistance to unemployed South Africans.

SASSA has also established a R595 threshold. Nobody is allowed to earn more than this amount in order to qualify for the grant. All public servants and people working in public service are issued with a persal number. This number can be used by SASSA to identify government workers who are applying for grants.

Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that more than 16 000 government workers received a R350 grant. The President slammed these workers and called their actions ‘unforgivable as this grant is meant to help the most vulnerable in our society.

SASSA spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, says that action will be taken against people who are trying to defraud the system. He said measures are being put in place to recover funds meant for individuals who undeservedly benefitted from the support mechanism.

“We are paying very serious attention to people who are attempting to defraud the social grant system and will definitely put measures in place to make sure that nobody still has money which is meant for the poor,” concluded Lesatsi.

If you believe SASSA has made a mistake, you can apply to have your grant application reconsidered by following the steps listed below.
