Teacher’s assistants were introduced in South African schools as the education sector battled with challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Teacher assistants are employed to help around schools so that teaching and learning can run more smoothly especially while the education system experiences disruptions due to Covid-19.

The teacher assistant posts are being offered through the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) as part of the Presidential Employment Initiative.

There are +- 192 000 positions available for Education Assistants (EAs) and there are  +- 95 000 General School Assistants (GSAs) positions. These positions require candidates do various duties around the school. Candidates are shortlisted for these positions based on their eligibility which includes: matching the criteria, proximity in school, and community involvement.

If you are a NSFAS student looking to be a teacher assistant unfortunately you will not be eligible as one of the requirements states that the candidate must be unemployed and not studying or in training and that the candidate must not be receiving NSFAS or Funza Lushaka Bursaries.

The reason for this is because the Presidential Employment initiative is meant for youth who are not already in employment, studying, or in training.

The rest of the requirements to be eligible for the positions are as follows:

  • Must be ages 18-35 years and must not be 36 years before 31 March 2022, except for LSEN schools where age is not a limit.
  • Must live within the area where the school is located
  • Only one person will be considered per household
  • People receiving social grants such as R350 SRD grant, disability, and child grant.
  • Must not have a criminal record
  • Must meet the category requirements per job.

If you meet these requirements then you can apply via SA Youth website, Moya App, Tshepo 1Million, and Harambee.

Applications will be closing on 10 October 2021.

The program interviews are expected to start from 11 October 2021 and the selected candidates will resume work on 1 November 2021.

The contract is 5 months starting from 01 November 2021 until 31 March 2021 and candidates will earn a stipend of R3817.44 per month minus R38pm UIF contribution.
