Approximately 287 000 young unemployed individuals BEEI

The second phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative is currently underway. Approximately 287 000 young unemployed individuals were placed at schools and given employment and training opportunities in the Education sector.

The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) forms part of the Presidential Youth Employment stimulus, which aims to decrease the economic challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Youth between the ages of 18 and 35, who are currently unemployed, not in education or training, nor receiving any form of government grant, as well as young people with disabilities and women, were eligible to apply.

Lala Maje, Project Management of the initiative, stated that these young people have gone for their interviews and signed contracts for the employment period at their schools.

Education assistants are placed in classrooms with the teachers and have been given a briefing of their responsibilities at the schools.

Officials from the Basic Education Department have been monitoring the placement of these young people.

Schools have found initiatives to ensure their time at the schools are worthwhile and that they gain leadership skills.

Maje stated that the youth are placed into teams at their schools, where a group leader is chosen. To ensure the development of leadership skills, the role of team leader is alternated.

The DBE will be monitoring the performance of those placed at schools and for them to be trained on several issues.
