Laboratory Assistant Opportunity at Wits University

The School of Pathology’s mission is to provide excellence in pathology in the form of service, teaching and research. The School has responsibilities to the Faculty of Health Sciences and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). Research Units affiliated contribute towards the diagnostic services of the NHLS by gaining a better understanding of disease processes whilst also allowing for R&D type research. Laboratory Support Staff is an important link in providing Researchers and Academics the opportunity to focus on achieving the School’s mission in an effective and efficient way.The RMPRU, located in Soweto at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is a division focused on research on pathogens that cause respiratory and meningeal infections and is affiliated to the School of Pathology. The services of a laboratory assistant is needed to provide support to the laboratory management, staff and students in primarily but not limited to the areas of sample archiving, equipment maintenance, stock control and reagent preparation. These areas identified contribute extensively to the overall GCLP compliance of the laboratory and the trials completed by the unit. Interested and suitably qualified individuals are invited to apply.

Responsibilites:

Main purpose is to support and maintain GCLP compliance of the laboratory.

Requirements:

  • Matric Certificate (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Science / Biology as subjects
  • Relevant tertiary qualification / diploma, laboratory experience and knowledge of GLCP will be an advantage

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s licence
  • Must be willing to work after hours when needed.
  • Comfortable to work with potentially infectious material
  • Able to work under pressure and multi task
  • Able to solve problems at advanced levels
  • Good verbal and written communication skills as well as high levels of computer literacy
  • Effective self-management with a conscientious work ethic and attention to detail
  • Motivated, organised, systematic and professional individual
