How to Paint Walls, Ceiling and Trim

If you are a novice DIYer or a veteran renovator, painting is one of the most effective projects for you. Neither this project is expensive, nor painful, you can easily handle it with all your confidence. But before getting started with your roller and primer, you need to customize a plan of attack that will help you to make your project even easier. We are going to demonstrate a complete guide including painting the walls, ceiling, and trim. Let’s get started.

Paint Prep is the First Approach

Don’t be a fool by starting with the rollers and brush too quickly. The quality of your painting highly depends on your prep. A prep will make a huge difference between an average painting and an extraordinary painting, stated by NEW CASA PAINTERS. Consider to take all the furniture out of the room, it makes your job easier.

Get 80-grit sandpaper to sand the walls first. Then, get a spackling paste and patch the holes, if any. When it’s dry, again sand your patches for a smooth finish, but this time with 180-grit sandpaper. Lastly, recaulk the corners and seams if you see any cracks. Now you are ready to paint the room.

From the Top to the Bottom

It’s ideal to start things from the ceilings first. We usually use a 4-8 ft. extension pole to paint the ceilings, but you can make use of a broom handle if you don’t have any. When you’re getting started with the ceilings, it’s great to have a 9-inch frame attached to your pole along with having a pan and a 0-5 inch thick roller. Make sure you cut in around the lights and the fixtures on your ceiling with an angle sash brush before starting to roll. Once you are done with cutting in, you can finally start rolling from one corner to another. Don’t move on before the paint dries.

With the Walls

Painting the walls after ceilings feel a lot more comfortable than painting the trim first. Painting the walls is almost the same as the process of painting the ceilings. In order to roll out your walls, you have to frame the room by painting the walls. In this part of the painting, you have to cut in around the base moldings, door frames, window frames, and wall fixtures. A nice clean line is important for painting the tri, hence, you need to overlay the paint onto the trim.

Finally, Paint the Trim

Painting a trim flawlessly takes a lot of practice. If you are a newbie, you will need a lot of 2-inch blue painter’s tape for painting the trim. You need to run that tape on the walls around the base molding, door frames, and window frames. Boxing in the trim can help you to get clean lines. After applying the coats of the paint on the trim, you should leave it for a few hours to try. Then, you can take the tape off.

Following these steps while painting your room will give you a professional look. It might take a bit longer for you than the professionals. However, decorating your room by yourself is very amusing and enjoying. All you need to have patience, make yourself ready with everything and get started with panting. You have a beautiful room by yourself.
