We usually respond to an advertisement for a teaching position when we write our cover letters or when someone tells us that there is an open position. However, at times we may come across an organization that does not have a position vacant but we would like to be considered for a future teaching position. Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot write an application letter for a non-vacant teaching position. You can!

While you may not receive an immediate response if you apply for a non-vacant teaching position, you may be asked to come in for an interview once a vacancy has opened up. It is sensible to send in your application letter for a teaching position in an organization that you really want to work for in case an opportunity does arise.

An application letter for a non-vacant teaching position will not be much different from a standard cover letter or application. You will be selling your skills by virtue of appropriate use of words just as you do when you apply for an open position. You may want to mention that you are aware of the fact that a position hasn’t opened up yet and you are willing to wait for when it does.

Dear Ms. Turner:

The International Baccalaureate Program that St. James Junior School has recently been accredited with, holds much interest for me. Ideally, I would like to obtain a teaching position at your school to help you during the teething period of the IB program for which I am enclosing my resume for your consideration.

I am a trained IB teacher with three years’ worth of experience in handling middle years’ programs and I am positive that I will be a good addition to your team of IB teachers.

At my present place of work (Yale’s Junior and High School), I am leading the first ever project-based learning module in Syracuse. I am partly responsible for designing it and it meets all the standards of the International Baccalaureate system. If possible, I would like to demonstrate to you how this works and its colossal effect on students’ learning curve.

Tuesdays are my days off and if you too are free next Tuesday, I would like to meet with you and discuss the possibility of me being incorporated into your teaching team.
