Salon Stylist Job Duties and Responsibilities

Job Description

The basic job of a salon stylist is to cut and style hair although they may be required to perform other salon services to their clients. They are usually employed by spas, salons and barber shops where they perform specialized treatments for occasions such as weddings and parties.

Salon stylists do not only style hair – they also perform skin and hair treatments such as manicures and pedicures, facials, deep conditioning and hair coloring. They confer with clients to understand what their style needs are and then employ techniques to make sure that these needs are met. It is also the job of a salon stylist to advise clients on how they can manage skin and hair care regimes at home and to recommend products to help them do this.

Job Requirements

It is important for salon stylists to obtain certificates in cosmetology if they want to work in this arena. Since competition is fierce in the world of beauty, it is important for salon stylists to incorporate other services into their salons so that they can stay afloat and be successful.

Career Progression

Starting out as assistants, salon stylists usually need to work hard towards becoming full-on salon stylists. They need to be able to take instructions from clients to ensure their satisfaction and provide advice in case a treatment is not good for their skin or hair type.
