Bursary Value – A student bursary of R105 000 per annum (excluding
operational costs) will be awarded to the successful applicants and will
be renewable in the second year of study.
The research project to be undertaken by the student in fulfilment of the requirements of an MSc must contribute to the mandate of the Scientific Authority.
The Scientific Authority was established in terms of Section 60 of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act of 2004 (NEMBA) to assist government with regulating the trade in specimens of threatened or protected species (TOPS) and species listed on the Appendices to CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
The research project must generate information that is useful for the conservation, management and sustainable use of one of the CITES-listed species on the attached application form. One bursary will be awarded to support a project on a plant species and one bursary will be awarded to support a project on an animal species. SANBI will nominate a co-supervisor and will cover all operational costs of the project.
The successful applicants will be expected to identify an appropriate supervisor at a South African university and then register with the university before the end of February 2015.
