Marine Alien Species Internship at SANBI

The South African National Biodiversity is offering a one year internship in the Biodiversity Research, Assessment and Monitoring Division to further develop research and monitoring of marine alien and invasive species.

Applicants should be science students interested in gaining practical experience in research and stakeholder engagement. Applicants should possess at least an Honours degree and be familiar with marine biology.

Who is eligible to apply?

We invite applications from Honours and Masters graduates, experience in marine alien species and/or biology will be an advantage. Preference will be given to historically disadvantaged individuals.

Potential interns should have a background and skills that will allow them to contribute in the following research areas:

  • Data sourcing, including knowledge on how to assemble data in a useable format
  • Data analysis (Excel databases and basic statistics, knowledge of R an advantage)
  • Writing of reports and communication with a network of scientists and stakeholders (excellent written and spoken communication in English is required)
  • Undertake background research about marine invasive species

Value of internship

The monthly stipend offered is fixed at R6 500 for Honours completed, and R7 500 for Masters completed. No other benefits apply as this is an internship position

Duration: May 2015 – April 2016
