All students who will register at public universities/ TVET colleges for the first time in 2017 and need financial support, can now apply directly to NSFAS for financial assistance. Applications will remain open between 01 August 2016 and 30 November 2016.The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has made it possible for academically deserving students who are in need of financial assistance to continue their studies. NSFAS offers a unique opportunity to access a loan, part of which can be converted to a bursary.

What is NSFAS and what do they offer?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a loan and bursary scheme operating in terms of Act 56 of 99 and funded by the National Department of Education. They offer:

• The means to obtain a tertiary qualification
• Loans at low interest rates
• Loans without guarantees
• A reasonable repayment plan.

NOTE: As of 1 August 2016, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) student centered model will be going live.

• All new applications (matriculants) must be submitted directly to NSFAS
• All students who have signed their loan agreement forms (LAF) for 2016 and are currently receiving NSFAS funding DO NOT HAVE TO REAPPLY.
• All students who were previously funded by NSFAS and are not funded in 2016 must apply online
• Students who have never received NSFAS funding must apply online

What is a NSFAS loan?

The money you borrow to cover all the costs associated with your tertiary studies and this money has to be repaid.

You qualify for a NSFAS loan if you are:

• A South African citizen
• Registered at a South African university or technikon
• An undergraduate, studying for a first higher educational qualification, or
• Studying for a second higher education qualification, if this is necessary to practise in your chosen profession (e.g. LLB or HDE)
• Able to demonstrate potential for academic success
• In need of financial assistance.

To all 2017 first year students

All students who will register at public universities/ TVET colleges for the first time in 2017 and need financial support can now apply directly to NSFAS for financial assistance. Applications will remain open between 01 August 2016 and 30 November 2016.

To all current university/ TVET college students already funded by NSFAS

NSFAS is in a process to receive all your information and details from the university/college where you are currently enrolled. You will be automatically migrated to the student-centred model, and will be notified by SMS/post once NSFAS has received and registered your details.

To all current university/TVET college students, who are not funded by NSFAS, but intend to apply for NSFAS assistance for the 2017 academic year

All the above mentioned students – including those who were previously on a government funded bursary programme not offered by NSFAS – can apply for NSFAS financial assistance for the 2017 academic year from 01 September 2016 to 30 November 2016.

To apply on the NSFAS website, you will be required to register first to create your personal online account, and then proceed to fill and submit the application form online. You may need about 30 minutes to complete this online process, and must also have scanned copies of the following required attachments:

• Matric Certificate
• Identity Document/Birth Certificate
• Last Academic Results
• Proof of parents income (If parent/s employed)
• Death Certificate/s (If parent/s deceased)
• Doctor’s Certificate (If permanently disabled
