The Economic Performance and Development (EPD) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council requires the services of fieldworkers on a short-term basis. The Department of Science and technology (DST) has appointed the Human Sciences Research Council to conduct an evaluation of the Nkowankowa Demonstration Centre (NDC) fruit processing factory in Tzaneen.

EPD urgently needs to appoint approximately 10 fieldworkers for a maximum duration of 25 days who will also be stationed in Tzaneen. The fieldwork is expected to run from 22 February  2016 to 30 April 2016 although flexibility around these dates is required.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in training and briefing sessions in preparation for the fieldwork and in the execution of the fieldwork;
  • Undertake preparatory liaison work with sampled project sites;
  • Undertake fieldwork interviews and focus group interviews nationally as per sampling framework and strictly observing all HSRC Research Ethics requirements;
  • Ensure the accurate documenting and recording of interviews;
  • Check content and accuracy of completed questionnaires on a daily basis and collect any missing or inaccurate data;
  • Ensure the timeous submission of completed questionnaires and digital records of all interviews conducted;
  • Attendance and participation in debriefing and data analysis sessions;
  • Make notes on any important observations for each project visited and submit these as a word document and part of your fieldwork report for each project visited;
  • Submit a brief report at the close of the field work which will provide details of interviews conducted and reflection on the fieldwork.

Key requirements

  • At least one year experience previous quantitative and qualitative field work experience; (undertaking surveys, focus groups and key informant interviews)
  • Fieldwork experience with HSRC an added advantage;
  • Fluency in local languages namely Sotho, Tsonga, Sepedi, Afrikaans and English is a key requirement for this contract;
  • Residence in any of the nine provinces in South Africa;
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn how to work across different socio-economic development themes;
  • Have access to a laptop;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
  • High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation;
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills;
  • Articulate and tactful communications skills;
