Roboticists

9 Essential Skills That All Roboticists Should Have

Posted on 25 January 202125 January 2021 by Khabza

It takes a particular type of person to excel at robotics. Within the careers that we choose, there are specific skills that we need to develop to be successful. The same is true of someone who wants to be a roboticist.

Developing these nine skills should be a high priority to anyone pursuing a career in robotic engineering.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Hands-On Robotics Experience
  • 2. Mathematical Knowledge
  • 3. Problem Solving
  • 4.  Programming
  • 5. Systems Analysis
  • 6. Adaptability
  • 7. Critical Thinking
  • 8. Decision Making
  • 9. Persistence
  • Conclusion

1. Hands-On Robotics Experience

It might seem to be a given that a roboticist should have some experience with real-life robotics, but so many engineers tend to spend so much time dealing with a theory of a project that there’s little time for anything else.

It’s crucial that a roboticist does more than just sit at a computer planning their project.

You learn so much more when you see what you visualized in your head start to take shape. You have to take your ideas from paper and transfer them to a real model.

This process will give you more insight into what works and what is just fantasy.

2. Mathematical Knowledge

The field of robotics involves many different types of mathematics. Geometry, algebra, and calculus are all essential mathematics used in the design of robots.

Becoming a roboticist without at least a basic grasp of these mathematics is like trying to become a doctor without understanding how the human body works.

If you don’t like math, it’s safe to say that robotics is not for you.

3. Problem Solving

Every type of engineering, including robotic engineering, is deeply involved in identifying a problem and working to find a solution to that problem.

A roboticist must be able to pay attention to the smallest detail and find what is working and what isn’t. This often involves the use of specific programs or tech to help in this endeavor.

4.  Programming

There are many different programming languages out there but they all follow the same basic principle. Although you don’t need to know them all, it helps to have a background in programming to become a good roboticist.

Robotic engineering uses programming mixed with hardware and electronics. The ability to learn programming language easily will help you in the long run. They call this the “programming mindset”.

5. Systems Analysis

The job of a roboticist requires that you are able to step back, look at the whole system, and understand how each part relates to one another.

This type of systems thinking is a great skill to have if you want to become a robotic engineer.

This is because robotics touches on a variety of engineering specialties, including mechanical engineering, programming, and even artificial intelligence.

6. Adaptability

To keep up with the ever changing technological advances, a roboticist must be adaptable to the times.

They need to keep up with the new programs and software used and be able to adjust their methods to align with those advances.

7. Critical Thinking

Any engineer would agree that critical thinking is a foremost skill that they utilize on a daily basis. It goes hand in hand with problem solving.

A robotic engineer must be able to constantly analyze and evaluate all the moving parts of a project.

Although they may heavily rely on programs and software to do some automatic processes, their brain is constantly in use.

8. Decision Making

Halting a project because you can’t decide on the color or number of parts can’t be an issue in a robotics program. A good roboticist can make quick decisions and use good judgement.

They follow their gut and weigh their choices wisely but in an efficient manner.

9. Persistence

It can get rough facing a difficult project that seems impossible to figure out. Robotics is a complicated and intricate science that requires patience and persistence.

A good roboticist won’t give up until they figure out the last missing piece of the puzzle, as puzzling as it is. They are willing to take it apart and start all over as many times as needed to get it right.

Conclusion

These nine skills will set up a person trained in robotic engineering to not only perform their duties, but excel in their field. Although there are not a huge amount of robotic engineers out there, the industry is tough and challenging.

A roboticist must stay on top of the newest technologies and constantly hone their skills to stay in the game.
