Afena Capital is looking for a Trainee Investment Analyst Graduate with relevant post-grad degree
Are you smart, dedicated and do you strive for excellence in all that you do? Do you believe that you have what it takes to be a part of this exceptional team of investment professionals?The primary responsibility of the analyst will be the research and coverage of stocks listed on the JSE.

This is a one year fixed-term contract. The successful candidates will work with and support the Investment team. Successful candidates are required to register for CFA level I (June) or any other level that they require to write, if they do not yet have a CFA qualification.

Responsibilities include:

  • Undertake in-depth research of selected industries. This includes talking to industry specialists, researching available published material, going on trips and site visits where appropriate and preparing reports on the industry.
  • Undertake thorough bottom-up research on companies to understand their history, characteristics, competitive advantages, weaknesses and risks.
  • Conduct company visits to meet with management to research growth and opportunities and earnings potential.
  • Conduct meetings and research of competitor companies to enhance knowledge and judgement.
  • Utilise above information and publicly available financial data to construct 3-yr earnings forecasts for the companies.
  • Utilise our in-house tools to value the companies.
  • Prepare research reports and presentations for Portfolio Managers.
  • Prepare supporting materials for Sales, Marketing and Client Servicing teams.
  • Maintain coverage of companies giving timely updates and reviews on earnings updates etc.

Minimum qualifications:    

  • Relevant post-grad degree (e.g. BCom (Hons), BBusSc, B.Eng, MBA)
  • Professional qualification (e.g. CFA) would be an advantage

Work experience:    

  • No relevant work experience required, but
  • Experience in equity analysis and modelling would be an advantage
  • Must be comfortable with Excel and enjoy working with numbers
