Grade 12 jobs: Interviewers at HSRC (250 Posts)

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) is looking for 250 Interviewers for the HAST programme.

Locations : Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria.

Closing Date: 03 February 2015.

The HAST research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, the majority  of which are donor-funded.  The HAST research programme specialises in research on the social determinants of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. The research strives to address these health problems at their source, namely, at both the social and population levels. It also includes social aspects of delivery models for biomedical interventions in order to optimise delivery of interventions.

Programmatic mapping and size estimation of key populations project

The HAST research programme has been commissioned by The Networking HIV/Aids Community of South Africa (NACOSA) and the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) to undertake a project on Programmatic mapping and size estimation of key populations: Sex Workers (male and female), Men who have Sex with Men, People Who Inject Drugs and Transgender People over the next 4-5 months. . The HSRC will be overseeing this study in partnership with organisations that provide service to these four key populations.

This study will be conducted in 20-30 sub-districts in the following provinces of South Africa: Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, North West, Kwazulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. All appointments will be done on the basis of the final selection of sub-districts that will be included in the sampling frame. We are looking for interviewers (250) who live in the selected sub-districts across South Africa. With all applications, please indicate the district which you are located, as well as the province. Duration: 1 month on a freelance contract

Job Purpose

To conduct interviews with participants in a confidential and sensitive manner.

Reporting to: Supervisor

Key responsibilities

  • Welcome participants
  • Conduct interviews with participant and  ensure that participants complete the interview according to protocol
  • Ensure quality and completed interviews
  • Ensure that all relevant forms are completed
  • Ensure that information is stored and managed in a confidential manner
  • Assist the Study Manager with the successful execution of the programmatic mapping and size estimate and with site reports

Key requirements

  • Member of a key population (i.e. Gay man/men who have sex with men (MSM), sex worker, transgender person, person who formerly injected drugs)
  • Grade 12 minimum
  • Good interviewing  skills
  • Comfortable about asking sensitive questions (about sexual behaviour and drug use behaviour) in an objective and non-judgmental manner
  • Good listener
  • Good inter-personal skills
  • Flexible schedule and willing to work outside standard office hours

  • Previous research experience as an interviewer would be an advantage.

Only successfully trained and competent fieldwork staff will be engaged to work on the project. All appointments will be done on a freelancer basis.
