The Wits Art Museum is searching for a skilled and motivated young person to serve as a Museum Education Intern at the museum

The purpose of the internship is to provide an opportunity for that individual to substantively contribute to the work of, and learn from, the education curator. The intern will be given specific tasks and responsibilities that will revolve around museum education, programming and researching for the school programme. The intern will be challenged to develop their capabilities, create or enhance connections between WAM and school educators, and gain experience. The intern is expected to be flexible and to take part in various activities at the office and sometimes to conduct field research. Knowledge of at least 2 South African languages is essential.

Wits Art Museum is home to an extraordinary collection of African art, including contemporary and historical art from South Africa and art from West and Central Africa. It hosts a dynamic programme of events and art exhibitions. The Museum is one of Johannesburg’s premier tourist attractions, along with the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. It is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct, just three blocks from Nelson Mandela Bridge. WAM is in the hip, regenerating area of Braamfontein, which is also home to many students, interesting shops and places to eat. The WAM Cafe is a fun place to meet friends and enjoy delicious food and coffee.

Requirements:

We expect candidates to have completed or be currently studying towards a degree in the arts. The applicant will be working at the museum in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. We are looking for an intern who is committed, hard-working, positive, open-minded, reflective and willing to learn.

Time Commitment:

  • Part -time post consisting of 3 months 50% followed by 3 months 70%, beginning 1 April 2016 and ending on 31 September.
  • Hours: 08h30- 12h30 (first 3 months) and 08h00- 14h30 (second 3 months)
  • Remunerated.
