Communications Internship at Wits Agincourt Research Unit

The MRC/Wits-Agincourt Unit has been conducting ongoing research in a rural community for over two decades collecting health, social and population information on an annual basis as well as nesting a range of studies.  The MRC/Wits-Agincourt unit seeks a journalist as a communications intern, who has the ability to promote the cutting edge research taking place in the Unit, with a focus on child and maternal health. The successful individual should be proactive and able to develop and execute effective strategies to profile the research of the Unit to relevant audiences using a range of communications approaches. The internship is offered for a period of 12 months to a versatile, hard working individual.

Scope of Work

The Communications intern will be nested in the Public Engagement Office and will work with PEECHi (Programme on Economic Evaluation of Child and Maternal Health interventions) to:

  • Develop and regularly update a Twitter feed for showcasing the work of the unit
  • Undertake Media liaison, cultivation and publicity – with a focus on the local radio and print media
  • Facilitate Internal communications with the Wits Communication Offices
  • Take a leading role in producing a monograph, relevant for policy makers and implementers, titled “State of Agincourt’s Children – Growing up in Rural South Africa”

Requirements

  • Relevant bachelors degree or equivalent
  • Strong English written and spoken communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and intellectual creativity
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines
  • Computer literate
  • Some experience in science, science communication or the public understanding of science will be advantageous
  • Willingness to live in Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga for the full year of the internship.
