When Do NSFAS Applications Close?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, better known as NSFAS, has had their applications open since August and have already received so many applications. However, when do applications close? Read this to find out.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, better known as NSFAS, has had their applications open since August and have already received so many applications. However, when do applications close?

Well, if you’re hoping to be funded by NSFAS next year, you have a month left to apply as the answer to that question is that NSFAS applications close on 30 November 2020.

NSFAS offers bursaries for South African students studying at public universities and TVET colleges. NSFAS has got you covered with funding for registration, tuition and allowances. To apply make sure you have a cellphone number and email address as well as your supporting documents.

No matter what your age is, if you meet the requirements, you can get funded by NSFAS.

The NSFAS requirements are as follows:

  • You’re a South African citizen
  • If you’re a SASSA grant recipient, you qualify for funding
  • You have a combined household income of not more than R350 000 per year
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per year

NSFAS has said, “we don’t discriminate against any race or any age” and that all an applicant needs to do is meet the requirements stated above.

Please note that NSFAS does not accept emailed or posted applications.

Another thing to remember is that when applying for NSFAS 2021 funding, you do not need to provide a separate consent form. NSFAS has removed this requirement as a way to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Did you know that you have more options and can apply for a NSFAS bursary at Teachers’ Centres? Well, now you know. You can now also apply for NSFAS funding in 2021 at National Youth Development Agency centres across South Africa.

Application results will be communicated to all applicants once NSFAS received confirmation from the institution that an academic offer has been made to you. NSFAS will inform you of their decision before the start of the academic year and this will be done through SMS, email as well as your myNSFAS account.

Once you are approved for NSFAS funding, the funding covers you until you finish your qualification. This does however depend on whether you continue to meet the academic criteria. You just need to focus on studying and passing your modules to secure your continued funding.

Once you’ve applied and you want to access your application status:

  • Login on the myNSFAS student portal through this link: https://bit.ly/2SWFVh3(link is external)
  • Enter your username and password, then click SIGN IN!
  • Click on Track Funding Progress.
  • Once you have followed these three easy steps, you will be able to see whether you are funded or not. It may take some time for your application to be successful so please be patient.

Minister Nzimande further urged, “We need to foster a culture of doing things on time and don’t leave them to the last hour. NSFAS has made arrangements to provide applications centres across the country, utilising facilities of generous stakeholders. These efforts are meant to bridge the gap in inequality”.
