HSRC Assistant Provincial Coordinator X12 Positions

The Human and Social Capabilities (HSC) research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, many of which are donor-funded.

The HSC research programme specialises in research on the social determinants of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. The research strives to address these health problems at their source, namely, at both the social and population levels. It also includes social aspects of delivery models for biomedical interventions in order to optimise delivery of interventions. HSC is based in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Sweetwaters.

The HSC research programme will be implementing the South African National HIV prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey (also known as SABSSM VI) and below are the positions the division seeks to fill:

Key responsibilities

  • Coordinate with fieldwork manager to ensure that Survey Fieldwork Teams have the necessary data collection instruments that they require (including questionnaires, tracking sheets, stationery and consumables)
  • Monitor data collection in terms of checking procedures, and cross-checking for correctness and completeness of questionnaires and unique barcode linkages.
  • Liaise with the supervisors with respect to the handover of all questionnaires, consent forms, and tracking sheets.
  • Liaise with the supervisors for the coordination and dispatch of DBS specimens to the laboratories for analysis on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that supervisors collect, collate, and check for the correctness and completeness of all household list, consent forms and tracking sheets.
  • Ensure that supervisors keep all records, documents and instruments of the survey safe/in appropriate working order.
  • Ensure that supervisors dispatch safely and in good time, after checking, completed questionnaires for data management to the central survey office in Pretoria after completion of schools in a district.
  • Be responsible for the quality control activities of the data collection. This will be achieved by physically checking the data collected and observing questionnaire administration and blood specimen collection.
  • Perform/execute any other tasks/responsibilities which are essential for the successful completion of the fieldwork part of the survey
  • Be instrumental in creating and maintaining a teamwork environment.
  • Give advice and assistance to all members of the Survey Field Team on site
  • Be available for the proactive identification of potential problems and solving thereof in consultation with the project manager as necessary/appropriate
  • Work together with supervisors to facilitate community entry in surveyed areas

Key requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of social science / or other
  • Honours and Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • Has proven experience in a managerial, coordinating or supervising position in a national survey study.
  • Has a valid driver’s license; can actually drive i.e. has driven a car in the last 3 months
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and compile reports (both numerical and narrative)
  • Ability to motivate team supervisors  
  • A background working in or familiarity with the area of HIV and AIDS in South Africa
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and has good problem-solving skills
  • Competence is speaking at least one other South African language relevant to province allocated in.
  • Available for a period of up to 12 months
  • Be committed and apply self-discipline to completing one’s task as required
  • Good interpersonal skills, self-confidence and the ability to work with and manage people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Personal integrity, a well- developed work ethic, and a willingness to work flexi-hours;
  • Confident and prompt planning, scheduling and organizational abilities; and
  • A South African Citizen.
