NMISA – National Metrology Institute of South Africa

The mission of the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) is to link the local and regional measurement systems internationally in support of trade, environmental health and safety, law enforcement and healthcare. As the cornerstone of a quality or technical infrastructure, this is achieved by providing the South African government departments, SOEs, industry, environmental entities, health and safety organisations, law enforcement sectors and national metrology institutes in the region with efficient, internationally recognised metrology standards and services.

The Institute’s mandate is to develop and maintain primary and secondary standards (chemical and physical quantities) for South Africa, compare these standards to international standards and establish global comparability; and to see to the correct use of the International System of Units (SI). The measurement standards are disseminated to South Africa and the region via a range of services and products such as calibration, reference materials, proficiency testing schemes and measurement services. In the event of a measurement dispute, NMISA is enacted to provide reference analyses.
