Table of Contents
PURPOSE
- This role is key to the effective functioning of the governance section within the Faculty of Humanities.
- The main purpose of this position is to support the governance structure and administration of qualification records.
- This includes servicing and supporting faculty committees, compiling handbooks and administering and supporting the Masters dissertation examination process.
REQUIREMENTS
- An NQF level 5 qualification and at least one year’s relevant experience in higher education academic administration.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Demonstrated time management skills and a proven ability to work accurately under extreme pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A high level of computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, e-mail, internet) and experience of working with databases, preferably PeopleSoft or an equivalent student administrative system.
- Demonstrated organisational skills and a high level of confidentiality.
- Flexibility, initiative and the ability to take responsibility for your own work and deliverables.
- The ability to work independently and as a team member as required.
- A strong customer service ethic, integrity, emotional intelligence, good interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a number of different constituencies, at different levels and in different contexts (including staff, external stakeholders, students and parents).
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administering the process for examination of research students’ dissertations.
- Updating the annual Faculty handbook(s) by making the changes as approved by the undergraduate and postgraduate accreditation committees.
- Providing administrative support for committee/s.
- Compiling minute books for archival purposes.
- Responding in a professional manner to all incoming queries in person, telephonically and by e-mail.
- Liaising with relevant offices and departments within the University and externally.
- Ensuring compliance with University and Faculty rules and procedures.

- The incumbent is expected to help with ad hoc duties which arise from time to time.

The following would be advantageous:
- Technical experience working in a molecular biology laboratory.
- Health and safety training and/or first aid (level 1) qualification.
- Familiarity with basic handwork routines and the use of basic power tools.
