Three SA youngsters win football scholarships to Europe

Three young footballers will soon be heading to the UK after being awarded scholarships by the Free State Tourism Authority (FSTA) and Simsport International.

This sports development initiative was established during the Phakisa Freeway under the major sports development programme.

The three are Karabo Mojai, 17, from Brandfort in Lejweleputswa district municipality, Teboho Mokoena, 17, from Bethlehem in Thabo Mofutsanyana district municipality and Thabang Thoabala, 15, from Bloemfontein in the Mangaung metro municipality.

They came out as the victorious trio from a trial session which had 40 youngsters representing all the regions in the province battle it out for the spot to join Accrington Stanley Football Club (ASFC) at a camp.

ASFC coach David Bailey complimented the three for being good athletes.

“The boys had a first class attitude from the beginning of the camp. I can truly say that they are the best that we have had so far and I believe that they will represent the Free State very well,” Bailey said.

FSTA acting CEO, Lefa Kalane, said the programme formerly known as the Bolton Wanderers Football Club Programme will now be called the Free State International Football Programme.

“The change of name came as a result of new developments and it was to expand the football development to include clubs that have a proven record to develop the stars that we have seen playing football during the recent held Fifa World Cup tournament that was hosted in Brazil,” Kalane said.

A second camp will follow in October where two more players will be selected to play in Netherlands.
