Education and Skills Development (ESD) Markers/Scorers for Mathematics tests (Ref. No. ESD 109)
The Education and Skills Development (ESD) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) requires the services of markers on a short-term basis to assist on an aspect of a larger project, commonly referred to as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, funded by Department of Basic Education (DBE).

ESD needs to appoint thirty scorers for a period of 12 working days.
- The marking/scoring process will take place over 12 days from 1 December to 19 December 2014.
- Scoring will not take place on 9 and 10 December (ESD workshop) and 16 December (Public holiday).
- At least 10 of the markers/scorers should be conversant in both English and Afrikaans.
- The scorers are required to assist with the scoring of the constructed response questions of the learner achievement tests.
- The job is based at the Pretoria Office of the HSRC.

Key requirements
The successful candidates must be able to:
- Scorers are able to speak, read and write English very well and are experienced in scoring/marking mathematics scripts;
- 12% of the scorers are able to speak, read and write Afrikaans very well and are experienced in scoring/marking mathematics scripts;
- Scorers have completed a post-secondary qualification, preferably in education or in mathematics/science or mathematics teaching;
- Scorers are able work under pressure and ensure that their work is accurate and of impeccable quality;
- Scorers are all available to attend the training session on 28 November 2014;
- Scorers are able to follow instructions and work diligently;
Training the scorers
- Each scorer will be thoroughly trained in the application of the TIMSS-N 2014 Main-test Scoring Guides for the Constructed-Response Items (open-ended items).
- A training session for the Constructed-Response items will be arranged at the HSRC on 28 November 2014, during which the scorers will be able to familiarise themselves with the Constructed-Response Items scoring procedures and score codes, as well as items as examples and practice papers.
