The University of London, along with Canon Collins Trust, is offering a scholarship programme to graduates in Africa. The aim of the programme is to equip candidates with the means to study towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and/or Masters of Laws (LLM) through distance learning at the University of London.
4 scholars will be selected to receive the award, which will cover full tuition fees and exam entry fees. Candidates will have between 1 to 5 years to complete the programme with their continuous registration on the course being dependant on their progress and academic reports.
Candidates have the option to start at any level and can choose to not complete the whole programme if they wish. For example, applicants can start at the Postgraduate Certificate level and work their way through to the LLM/ stop after completing the PG Certificate. Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree may start at the LLM level, skipping the PG Certificate and Diploma.
The University of London, along with the Canon Collins Trust will select the recipients of the award.
Please note: Your entry point is your STARTING point within the Postgraduate Laws programmes. Regardless of the entry point, the candidate will be awarded the PGDip, PGCert, the LLM or all three if they complete their studies within 5 years.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
General requirements:
- Must be a national or have refugee status in South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, or Congo
- Must reside in one of the above countries
- Must have completed the necessary qualifications for admission to the programme
- Must be currently employed (full time or part time)
- Must be able to commit to 10 hours of study per week (minimum)
- Must apply to study at the University of London (applications can be submitted here)
Requirements for the LLM entry point – you must have 1 of these:
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) qualification with second-class honours from the University of London
- A second-class bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with at least half the units being law-related subjects
- Passed the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) of England and Wales or the Qualifying Exam of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority of England and a second-class bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Completed the Common Professional Examination or Graduate Diploma in Law and a second-class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
- Qualified as a solicitor or barrister in Wales, England or equivalent in another country
Requirements for the PGDip entry point – you must have 1 of these:
- A second-class bachelor’s degree or equivalent from the University of London or any other acceptable institution
- A Master’s Degree
Requirements for the PGCert – you must have 1 of these:
- A Bachelor’s Degree from the University of London or any acceptable institution
- A minimum of 5 years relevant work experience (e.g. banking, accounting, insurance, or finance)
English language requirements:
During the programme, the candidate will be required to have a strong command of the English language. The candidate meets the requirements if within the past 3 years they have achieved any of the following:
- (IELTS) International English Language Testing System with an overall score of 6.5 and 6 in the written test (minimum scores)
- (TOEFL) Test of English as a Foreign Language with an overall score of 92 (with 22 in the Reading and Writing sub-tests) and 20 in the Speaking and Listening sub-tests (minimum requirements)
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) with an overall score of 59/ above with a minimum of 59 in both Writing and Reading elements and a minimum of 54 in Listening and Speaking elements
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (with a minimum of a grade C)
- Duolingo: must achieve an overall score of 120 or more
Computer requirements:
The Postgraduate Laws programmes offer provisions that are fully electronic. Candidates are expected to have full and excellent internet access, however, should this not be the case, the candidate can make a case with the programme director who can offer printed copies of the basic learning materials.
Please note that this is only in desperate circumstances, for the purpose of enhancing accessibility: examples include disability or imprisonment.

- ID document (or birth certificate, passport, driver’s license)
- Academic transcripts (if applying for LLM studies)
- Degree certificates/ school/ other certificates (if applying for LLM studies)
- 2 x reference letters relating to the scholarship application and how you would be a suitable candidate (preferably a reference from an employer and an academic reference or 2 work references if you have not attended university)
- 2 latest payslips
